In 1988 after leaving the band Class-X, Carroll entered a song called "Brazos" into a Guitar Player magazine contest. Buckethead then later began making demo recordings of both his playing as well as his writing styles, which would be released as acoustic albums in the future. Buckethead played a quick tribute to all his early teachers on a popular internet video filmed in 2003 when the Deli Creeps played a show at Styles Music's 25th anniversary. His early teachers included Max McGuire, the late Johnny Fortune (1943–2006), Mark Hammond, and then many years with Pebber Brown. His playing began improving by taking private lessons from various teachers at a local music store, Styles Music. He had been quoted as saying, however, that he did not become serious until a year later when he moved from Huntington Beach, CA to Claremont, CA. Buckethead began playing at the age of twelve. His father was Tom Carroll, an athletic director at Damien High School, and has three sisters Lynn, Lisa, Laurie, and one brother, John. Buckethead has also written and performed music for major motion pictures, including: Saw II, Ghosts of Mars, Beverly Hills Ninja, Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, Last Action Hero, and the main soundtrack of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie.īuckethead was born as Brian Carroll on May 13 1969.
He has collaborated extensively with a wide variety of high profile artists such as Bill Laswell, Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Iggy Pop, Les Claypool, Serj Tankian, Bill Moseley, Mike Patton, Viggo Mortensen, and was a member of Guns N' Roses from 2000 to 2004. He has been voted number 8 on a list in GuitarOne magazine of the "Top 10 Greatest Guitar Shredders of All Time" as well as being included in Guitar World's lists of the "25 all-time weirdest guitarists" and is also known for being in the "50 fastest guitarists of all time list".īuckethead performs primarily as a solo artist. He also incorporates nunchucks, robot dancing, and toy trading into his stage performances. More recently, he has switched to a plain white bucket no longer bearing the KFC logo. When performing in his theatrical persona, Buckethead used to wear a KFC bucket on his head, emblazoned with an orange bumper sticker that reads FUNERAL in capital black block letters, and an expressionless plain white costume mask. His music spans such diverse areas as progressive metal, funk, blues, jazz, bluegrass, ambient, and avant-garde music.
